Australia secured a thrilling victory against Argentina, ending their eight-match losing streak in the Rugby Championship, thanks to a last-minute penalty from Ben Donaldson. The 25-year-old successfully converted from a short distance during the final moments of the match, marking the Wallabies' first win in the tournament since 2022.
The match took place at Estadio Jorge Luis Hirschi, where the Pumas initially took control, leading 10-0 and later 16-7. However, the Wallabies fought back in challenging weather conditions, showcasing resilience to clinch the win. Juan Martinez Gonzalez was the sole try-scorer for Argentina in the first half, while Santiago Carreras contributed with three penalties, giving the home side a solid advantage.
Australia responded with tries from Jake Gordon and Rob Valetini, alongside a penalty and two conversions from Noah Lolesio. The game remained tightly contested as it approached its conclusion, with Donaldson stepping up to convert a crucial penalty that sealed the match.
Despite this victory, Australia finds itself at the bottom of the standings, trailing behind Argentina, New Zealand, and leaders South Africa. The Wallabies, who faced significant defeats against the Springboks earlier in August, will have a chance to redeem themselves in a rematch against Argentina in Sante Fe on September 7, as they prepare to host the British and Irish Lions next year.
