Ricky Pearsall, a player for the San Francisco 49ers, has been discharged from the hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound to the chest during an attempted robbery in San Francisco. The 23-year-old athlete was reported to be in a "serious but stable condition" following the incident near Union Square on Saturday afternoon.
In a statement released on Sunday, the 49ers confirmed that Pearsall has been released and is on the path to recovery. Authorities have apprehended a 17-year-old suspect, with charges expected to follow.
Social media footage captured Pearsall being assisted by paramedics as he was transported to an ambulance, visibly injured but conscious. Upon police arrival, two individuals were found with injuries and taken to the hospital. According to the police report, the incident began when one individual attempted to rob Pearsall, leading to a physical confrontation that resulted in injuries to both parties.
David Lombardi, a reporter covering the 49ers, shared a message from Pearsall's mother, Erin, who detailed the severity of her son's injury, noting that the bullet entered his chest and exited through his back. She expressed gratitude that the bullet missed critical organs and mentioned that he is currently in good spirits.
The San Francisco 49ers expressed their appreciation for the local law enforcement and emergency medical teams, as well as the medical staff at San Francisco General Hospital who provided care for Pearsall. The athlete was selected in the first round of the NFL draft in April, joining the league's ranks after a successful college career. He had recently returned to practice following a shoulder injury and was preparing for the team's season opener on September 10.
